James Davis

James Eugene Davis, MD, 53, of North Liberty, died Jan. 2, 2014 of a brain tumor. He was at home surrounded by family.
Services were held at the Newman Catholic Student Center in Iowa City. The celebrant was Father Ed Fitzpatrick. A Memorial Mass and cremation entombment will be in Indianapolis, Ind., at a later date.

Jim was born Dec. 7, 1960, in Indianapolis to James E. Davis Sr. and Mary Catherine Davis. He grew up in Carmel, Ind. He attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Carmel High School where he was a drum major and participated in theatre. He attended Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind., and was a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity Class of 1983. He married Rebecca Davis, a medical school classmate, on July 21, 1984, and they graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1987.
His training continued at Los Angeles County University of Southern California in General Surgery (1987-1992) followed by a cardiothoracic fellowship at University of Iowa (1992-1995). His formal training was completed in 1997 at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles as a pediatric cardiothoracic surgery fellow.
He practiced pediatric cardiothoracic surgery at the University of New Mexico (1997-1998) and then at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans (1998-2007). In 2007 he returned to the University of Iowa as the section head of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery. His free time was centered around family and astronomy.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years Rebecca (Beaty) Davis, MD; three children: Diane, Allison, and James; his father James E. Davis Sr.; and siblings Michael (Debbie) Davis of Horse Cave, Ky., Bill (Susie) Davis of Indianapolis, Ind., and Jill (Jim) Stratton of Jefferson City, Mo.
He was preceded in death by two unborn children and his mother Mary Catherine.
Special thanks is extended for the gifts of faith, family and friends. To the Lord, for His guidance, comfort and many blessings. To his parents for their love. To his wife and best friend Becky who moved each time he asked. To his three children Diane, Allison and James for the gift of their love and the joy they have given him. Thank you to Tina, Sue, Shawn and Mark, who have helped him fulfill his calling to care for children with heart disease.
Memorial donations can be directed to the Newman Catholic Student Center at the University of Iowa; Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind.; and the University of Iowa Foundation directed to the Children’s Hospital Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.
