Janet D. Markham, 88, formerly of Ottumwa, died Nov. 25, 2013, at Solon Nursing Care Center in Solon.
She was born Feb. 3, 1925, in Janesville, Wis. to Eldon H. and Ruth (Sherman) Damrow. She married David Markham on June 14, 1947. He preceded her in death on May 4, 1973.
Jan earned a bachelor of science degree in occupational therapy from the University of Wisconsin. She and her husband moved to Ottumwa in 1953 where she had been an office manager for Dr. Coppoc.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Ottumwa where she had served as Elder. She was also a member of Chapter G P.E.O, Book Club and an 18-year member of the Ottumwa School Board. She served on the organizational board for the Area Educational Agency from 1974 to 1986, served on the Ottumwa Public Library Board and many other civic organizations.
Surviving are her two daughters, Martha Markham of Iowa City and Sarah (Fred) Harris of North Liberty; five grandchildren; a sister, Joan Acosta of Woodbridge, Va.
She was preceded in death by her son Stephen Markham; three brothers, her twin, Jack Damrow, and infants William and Robert Damrow and a sister Priscilla Hargraves.
Her body has been donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine.
Memorial services were held Dec. 1 at the First Presbyterian Church in Iowa City, with the Rev. Dr. Sam Massey officiating. The family greeted friends in Ottumwa that evening at Reece Funeral Home.
