John McMurrer, of Iowa City, died in his sleep following months of struggle with declining health on June 4 at Solon Care Center in Solon. Prior to moving to Iowa City in 2005, John lived for 40 years in Salina, Kan., the place he called home.
John served in the US Marine Corps during WWII. He graduated from Georgetown University, after which he worked as an FBI agent until his retirement in 1978.
He is survived by his daughters, Mary of Iowa City, and Jane of Greenwood, Indiana; son-in-law, Bob Libra; granddaughters Jesse and Rachel Libra; sisters Pat McBride and Nancy Wampler, sister-in-law Joan McMurrer, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Ethel and Clemment McMurrer, brother, Bob McMurrer, and son, Timmy McMurrer.
John was an avid sports participant, lover of music, excellent joke teller, and friend to all. During his years in Iowa City he thoroughly enjoyed his friends at Legacy Ridge and his poker buddies at the American Legion. He is greatly missed.
Gathering of friends was held at The Kirkwood Room adjacent to Lensing Funeral Home in Iowa City on June 8. Another celebration of John’s life will be held in Salina, Kan., at a later date. Lensing Funeral Home in Iowa City is handling arrangements.
