Spring events calendar

March 26
Basics of Birding I:
7 p.m., CEC.
This is the first session of a six-class birding course co-sponsored by the Iowa City Bird Club. Field Trips are also planned in conjunction with these classes. To learn more about the Iowa City Bird Club, or this class, visit their website at www.icbirds.org/. Iowa City Bird Club members are free. Topics covered in this first session, led by Rick Hollis, will include field identification of birds, field guides, and what equipment every birdwatcher needs.

April 2

This second class in the birding series will be a continuation of the March 26 Basics of Birding I session. Iowa City Bird Club field trip at
F.W. Kent Park: 8 a.m., CEC.
Rick Hollis will lead a hike on the trails of F.W. Kent Park looking for migrating songbirds and resident woodland birds. To register call Brad at the Conservation Education Center at 319-645-1011 or email Brad at bfreidhof@co.johnson.ia.us. No fee for field trips.

April 9
Where to bird in Johnson County:
7 p.m., CEC.
Rick Hollis will share well known, lesser known and secret places to watch birds and study nature in and around Johnson County in this third class of the birding series. April 16
Backyard and feeder birds:
7 p.m., CEC.
In the fourth class of the birding series, Jim Scheib will discuss the common birds found in area backyards during the year, and what types of feeders and food to use to attract them. Birds of Hickory Hill Park and
Waterworks Park in Iowa City:
7 p.m., CEC.
In the fifth class of the birding series, Jim Scheib will focus on the inhabitants of these two local parks. Woodland wildflower hike:
6:30 p.m., Clear Creek Area.
A long winter leaves many craving a splash of color on the bleak winter landscape. Woodland wildflowers emerge each spring to bring that respite from the dreary winter views. Join conservation staff on a hike at the Clear Creek Area to explore the emerging spring woodland wildflowers. Dress for a hike through the woods as the hike may go off trail. Pre-registration is requested. Call Brad at the Conservation Education Center 319-645-1011 or email him at bfreidhof@co.johnson.ia.us. This is a great opportunity to explore the Clear Creek Area with conservation staff.

April 30
Warbler identification and
shorebird review: 7 p.m., CEC.
This is the final session of the six-class birding course. Karen Disbrow will lead this class presenting information on warblers and shorebirds that are returning to Iowa.
