Kiesel granted Quit Claim deed

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty City Council agreed to issue a Quit Claim deed to a local businessman last Tuesday, Aug. 11.
Bill Kiesel, owner and operator of MidAmerican Hobbies, sought a deed to a piece of property, less than 0.3 acres, adjacent to his current business property on 240th Street. According to Kiesel, the deed was part of a 2006 land agreement between himself and the city.
In 2005, the city required Kiesel to relocate his hobby store– which included an outdoor track for remote-controlled vehicles– from Liberty Plaza to a place farther away from residential areas. The city agreed to sell Kiesel three parcels of property; two of those parcels were transferred to Kiesel through Quit Claim deeds in 2006, but the third property was still under city ownership, according to records in the Johnson County Assessor’s office.
When Kiesel recently pushed to have the property signed over, document reviews raised a question of actual ownership, according to City Attorney Scott Peterson.
Because of the uncertainty about ownership, the city asked Kiesel to sign a release absolving the city of further responsibility for the property, but Kiesel was unwilling to sign until the city officially agreed to issue him the deed. The delay resulted in Kiesel offering heated comments at the council’s July 14 meeting.
Last Tuesday, Mayor Tom Salm said he had engaged in several conversations with Kiesel and finally “had everything figured out,” so the documents could be signed and exchanged.
Sitting in the council chamber audience, Kiesel agreed.
The council unanimously passed a resolution to dispose of the third property and issue a Quit Claim deed to Kiesel, who said after the meeting he intended to sign the city’s release and was anxious to move forward as full owner of the property.
