Knight Prairie hike at F.W. Kent Park August 11

OXFORD– The majority of the State of Iowa was once covered by tall grass prairies. Today, little remains of these magnificent ecosystems. The Johnson County Conservation Board is trying to change that by protecting remnant prairies and restoring some of the native vegetation that was found in the Iowa prairies, as well as restoring associated animal communities. Dave Wehde, Vegetation Specialist for the Johnson County Conservation Board and other staff will be on hand to lead an informative hike around the Knight Prairie at F.W. Kent Park.  Join us at the Knight Prairie Pavilion parking lot on Thursday, August 11 at 6:30 p.m. for a tour through a little living history called the Knight Prairie.  For those that cannot attend that evening please utilize the outdoor educational exhibits at the Knight Prairie Pavilion, which was provided with assistance from the Knight family.
Please wear long pants, close-toed shoes and be prepared to hike through the beauty that can be recreated with a lot of hard work, dedication and a dream. This is the closest thing that we currently have to time travel into Iowa’s past.  Don’t miss this opportunity.
For more information about this program or to register for this event contact Brad at the Johnson County Conservation Education Center at 319-645-1011. Registration for this is event is requested.
