Lady Spartans dominate Classic
SOLON– The Lady Spartans cranked out 17 hits against Iowa City City High pitcher Sasha Frauenholz to notch their 29th win of the season Saturday, June 28, at the 2014 Solon Classic.
Solon defeated City High 11-2, and also picked up wins against Des Moines Lincoln (2-1) and Keokuk (4-1) Friday at the home tournament.
The Lady Spartans trailed 1-0 after the second inning, but scored three times in the third to take the lead.
Pitcher Holly Hinkel found herself in a jam in the bottom of the third, loading the bases with two outs and then issuing a walk to score another City High run. After a short meeting on the mound, Hinkel struck out the final batter on three pitches.
Hanging on to a 3-2 lead, Solon erupted for six runs in the fourth inning, batting through the line-up.
The Lady Spartans tacked on two more runs in the sixth.
Hinkel took the win, striking out six while allowing a single earned run. Freshman McKenna Miller pitched three innings of scoreless relief.
Sydney Lawson went 3-4 at the plate with four RBI and three runs scored, while Taylor Nearad was 3-5 with two doubles and three RBI.
On Friday, June 27, Solon scored two runs on only four hits in a 2-1 win over Des Moines Lincoln.
Lawson and Nearad were each 2-3 at the plate.
Emily Ira struck out 10 batters and allowed only two hits in the win.
Lawson had three RBI in the Lady Spartans’ 4-1 win over No. 13 (4A) Keokuk. Nearad was 2-3 with a double while Ira was 2-3 with an RBI.
Solon hosted the Classic just a day after taking a doubleheader from Independence June 26.
The Lady Spartans rolled, with 31 hits over the course of the two games.
Five Solon players each had a multiple-hit game in the 11-1 win in the first game, with Nearad a perfect 4-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Riley Ogden was 3-3 with a double, a home run and four RBI.
Ira struck out 10 batters over four innings, allowing a single earned run, while Miller pitched an inning of relief.
Ali Herdliska was 2-3 with two doubles and three RBI in the 10-3 win that followed. Lawson was 3-4 and scored three times.
Hinkel struck out seven and scattered six hits for the win, with Miller again appearing for a single inning at the end.
Solon dropped to No. 4 in the 4A rankings issued June 27 by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
The Lady Spartans earned a bye for the first round of the Class 4A Region 3 playoffs, and will face either Marion or Dubuque Wahlert in a semifinal game Saturday, July 12, at Solon.
