Lady Spartans on to state
SOLON– Monday night, June 9, at the Spartan field, will be remembered for many years to come as the night the Solon girls’ soccer team made history.
The Lady Spartans took on the 10th-ranked Gladbrook-Reinbeck Rebels in a Class 1A Region 6 final, and won 1-0 to advance to the state tournament.
“I was so proud of the effort tonight. We have been working so hard on our game plan, both offensively and defensively,” said head coach John Tucker. “We controlled the ball really well and were able to get some good looks on the goal.”
Both teams set the pace with many shots on the goal and great offensive and defensive plays and the first half finished with no points on the board.
In the second half the roar of the Solon crowd exploded as Solon senior Anna Seydel scored the winning goal three minutes into the second half with a high, long shot that slipped through the Gladbrook goalie’s fingertips.
“Our defense did an amazing job shutting down the second leading scorer in the state,” Tucker said. “Gladbrook-Reinbeck is obviously a great team, but we put together a great effort all the way across the board. It was an amazing team effort and I couldn’t be more proud, and happy for the girls. They worked so hard for this!”
Senior Katie Silberstein was credited with guarding the net for eight saves.
The Lady Spartans reached the final by dominating Mount Vernon, 6-1, in a regional semifinal Friday in Solon.
Solon enjoyed a first round bye, while the Mustangs had to push through Anamosa in a first-round match-up.
The Lady Spartans took an early lead and never looked back, with Brianna Pike and Josie Durr each scoring twice. Emma Moss added a goal and two assists, while Katie Vitosh scored her first goal of the season to round out the Solon scoring.
Silberstein had four saves defensively.
Solon will be taking on Iowa City Regina in the Class 1A quarterfinals of the Girls State Soccer Tournament Thursday, June 12, at 12:45 p.m. at the Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines. Eight teams in Class 1A will battle for a spot in the semifinal round on Friday afternoon.
Two teams will advance to the championship game scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 14.
