Lady Spartans sweep Anamosa, Beckman
SOLON– The Solon Lady Spartans have moved to 33-1 with doubleheader sweeps over Anamosa and Dyersville-Beckman last week.
The softball postseason begins Saturday, July 12, as Solon hosts either Marion or Dubuque Wahlert in a Class 4A Region 3 semifinal with a 7 p.m. start. The Region 3 final will be Tuesday, July 15, in Solon, also with a 7 p.m. start.
Solon moved up to No. 3 in the final 4A rankings issued July 3 by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.
The Lady Spartans out-scored Anamosa 22-0 in two games shortened by the mercy rule July 1 in Solon.
Holly Hinkel pitched three innings, allowing one hit and striking out seven in a 12-0 win.
The Lady Spartans scored seven runs in the first inning and five in the second, despite only six hits. Solon picked up an additional 12 runners off Anamosa pitcher Karli Oltmanns, and some of those runners were on base when Emily Ira hit a home run and when Mallory Madsen tripled.
Ali Herdliska homered and had five RBI in other half of the twin bill, a 10-0 shut-out.
Ira pitched five perfect innings for the win, striking out 12 of the 15 batters she faced.
Madsen was 3-3 at the plate scoring twice, while Taylor Nearad was 2-2 and scored three times. Madsen and Nearad each had two stolen bases.
Solon had 35 total hits in the doubleheader road sweep of Dyersville Beckman July 3.
The Lady Spartans broke open a 3-3 tie with six runs in the final two innings for a 9-3 win, and coasted to a 10-2 win in a game in which Ira collected 18 strike-outs.
