Mary Kay Gerleman, 93, of Cedar Rapids, died Nov. 3, 2013, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Funeral Mass was on Nov. 8 at All Saints Catholic Church by the Rev. John Flaherty. Burial followed at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Harper.
Mary Kay is survived by her children Carol (Dan) O’Brien and their children Angie and Katie of Cedar Rapids; Barbara (Bill) Hamann of Oconomowoc, Wis. and their children David of Richardson, Texas and Lisa of Oconomowoc, Wis.; David (Joyce) Gerleman of Swisher and daughter Gina of Hiawatha, LuAnn (Terry) Patten of LaGrange, Wyo. and her children Janice (Dirk) Newhoff of Bayard, Neb., Robert (Connie) Payton of Durango, Colo., and Philip (Kim) Payton of Bellview, Colo, and several great grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Eve Parrish of Cedar Rapids, Bernadette (Wilbert) Adam of Keota, and Rose Ann (O. Beryl) Giltner of Akron, Ohio; and brother Leon (Rose) Leinen of West Des Moines. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband Gus in 1984.
Mary Catherine was born June 23, 1920, in South English, the daughter of John W. and Anne B. Leinen. She received her education at St. Elizabeth Catholic School in Harper and the Commercial Business College in Omaha, Neb. She married Gus Gerleman on Oct. 15, 1966, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. She did secretarial work at Creighton Memorial St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha. In 1954 she moved to Cedar Rapids and was employed at Collins Radio and later by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Her passions were cooking and taking care of her grandchildren.
