Mary Elizabeth Velky, 78, of Solon, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House. Services were Feb. 17 at Brosh Chapel in Solon, with burial following in Sulek Cemetery near Shueyville.
Mary was born May 9, 1935, in Shabbona, Ill., the daughter of Floyd and Gladys Buchanan. She graduated from Waterman Community High School in Waterman, Ill. She was united in marriage to Emil Thomas Velky, Sr. on Nov. 3, 1956, in Shabbona. Mary and Emil farmed near Ainsworth until moving to Ely, continuing farming and operating the trucking company. Mary worked at the Powers Truck Port in Cedar Rapids, Double C in Ely, Country Café in Solon, and for the College Community School District as a cook until her retirement. She enjoyed going to auctions and sales, traveling, going to the casino, sitting on the porch and watching the outdoors, and spending time with her family. Mary was very involved in Velky and Sons Trucking, as well as the Solon American Legion Auxiliary and had served as president of the first district.
Mary is survived by her husband Emil of over 57 years, her children Emil (Dona Wensel) Velky, Jr. of Cedar Rapids, Gloria (Pat) Malatek of Ely, Cheryl Velky of Brandon, Charlie (Julie) Velky of Cedar Rapids, Brian (Karrie) Velky of Ely and Tanya (Chris McAfee) Velky of Cedar Rapids; eleven grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents Floyd and Gladys Buchanan, a daughter Donna Marie Velky-Clark, and her brother Charles Buchanan.
