Misel first, Lady Spartans open track season at Demon Indoor
IOWA CITY– Solon’s Cara Misel needed every inch of her career-best shot put win at the Washington Demon Indoor invitational March 6 in Iowa City. Misel’s 40-1 1/2 toss locked up first place for her in the season opener at the University of Iowa track. Second was 39-10 from Amanda Houston of Fort Madison. There were 25 schools at the meet.
“We had some very good spots for the first meet. Kara’s winning throw of over 40 feet was huge,” noted Solon coach Brent Sands. “Kelsey Cave’s 5-3 high jump (second place overall) was big, too. The winner edged her with fewer misses.” Another top finish for Solon was Emily Bransky (27.08 for third place) in the 200.
Sands pointed to two Solon finalists in the 60 meter hurdles; Jennifer Shelman and Rylee Smith; with Jessica Brimeyer qualifying in the 60 meter dash. “We had several good 800 legs, too, on the two 4x800 relay teams we entered,” said Sands. “It looks like we have some good competition for those spots.”
With a couple more indoor meets before things move outside, Sands says he would like to find more 400 meter runners. “We had a few good runs (at the Demon invite), but were missing quite a few people, (committed to a music concert).”
