New coaches lead Clippers on the links
TIFFIN– It’s a season of change for both the girls and boys golf programs at Clear Creek Amana with two new coaches. Nathan Carlson has taken the helm of the girls’ team while Sean Patrick is the new skipper for the boys.
Carlson inherits a squad with three seniors; Gabi Scarpa, Anna Johnson and Whitney Schuttire. Scarpa was ranked 13th in Class 4A last year. Juniors Sara McGrath, Nicole Davis and Haley Mougin bring needed experience to the team while sophomore Alison DeVore and freshmen Emma Davis, Megan Graff, Ashlee Kopejtka, Jillian Shrader and Kalista Wilgenbusch round out the group.
“Western Dubuque and Williamsburg will be the teams to beat,” Carlson said, but, “we should be in the next tier or right with them.”
Patrick also comes into a program with experienced leaders, but only one senior, Jacob Klingeman. Juniors Killian Walters, Dylan Wolfe and Zak Caldwell are back in the Clipper line-up with sophomores Coltyn Schulte, Nolan Novara and Cal Miller.
Nicholas Bryant, a junior, is new to the squad this year as are freshmen Tyler Hallett, Joe Rohret, Nicholas Payne, Wyatt Kurka and Alex Frith.
“I have high hopes for our team and our individuals this year,” Patrick said. “With several returning letter winners coming back, all but one who have multiple years remaining in the program, I look forward to identifying the parts of our game that we can improve on, and be as competitive in the league that we can be.” The coach added the squad’s strength is found in its youth, “in that the process of improvement of our skills, poise and decision making can be one of patience, not one of urgency.”
Patrick said he was “excited to jump into being a part of Clipper athletics,” and hopes the team will respond to his vision of increased maturity, dedication and performance throughout the 2014 season. “Golf is about honor, integrity and character,” he said. “Our boys will be expected to display those traits every time they step on a course and represent Clear Creek Amana High School.”
