Nicol tabbed for Solon hoops coach

SOLON– The Solon Community School District made a contingent offer of employment to Tony Nicol as middle school counselor and head varsity girls’ basketball coach. The offer is pending school board approval.
Nicol is 1987 graduate of Solon High School and received his bachelor and masters degree in counseling from of the University of Iowa. Nicol spent the previous 20 years in education in various capacities. Most recently, Nicol served as the ninth and tenth grade dean of students at Linn Mar High School in Marion, as well as Linn Mar’s assistant varsity boys’ basketball coach. While on the staff at Linn Mar, Nicol helped guide the Lions to three state championships and nine straight appearances in the 4A state tournament.
The announcement was made Wednesday, May 23, in a press release issued by Solon activities director Keith McSweeney.
“We are thrilled to welcome Nicol back to Solon,” commented Middle School principal Mike Herdliska. “Nicol brings with him immeasurable talents and experiences in addition to a strong commitment to developing student relationships and a collaborative working relationship with staff.”
Solon activities director Keith McSweeney added, “We’re excited the process yielded such a quality individual for this position. As a coach, Tony brings a wealth of experience and a championship mentality that is easy to identify the moment you meet him. I’m confident Tony will have a great influence on our students, will be a leader in our district, and will provide our girls with a tremendous basketball experience.”
Solon Superintendent Sam Miller said he was excited to have Nicol join the school district. “Tony brings extensive experience in a variety of educational roles and will be a tremendous asset for our students, staff and parents,” Miller said.
“Coach Nicol is going to be an excellent fit as head basketball coach in our program,” observed Solon junior Alyssa Rickels. “He has the passion, knowledge and experience to get our program to be the best it can be.”
Nicol previously served as middle school counselor at Solon during the 2003-2004 school year. He also served as high school English teacher and high school counselor at Linn-Mar.
