NL Legion Auxiliary to host benefit May 3 for English River Outfitters
NORTH LIBERTY — A new resort for veterans near Washington, Iowa will receive a needed boost May 3 as the North Liberty American Legion Auxiliary hosts a “Support our Veterans” benefit Bar-B-Q at the Legion hall.
English River Outfitters is a resort for veterans, designed specifically to meet the needs of the disabled vet , and their families. The resort is located in Washington County, approximately five miles south of Washington. It is surrounded by Sockum Ridge Park, which is 215 acres of actively managed woodlands.
The resort was founded in 2008 with the goal of helping veterans to relax and to be able to talk about their experiences, have access to counseling,; and reap the benefits of a support group. Hunting and fishing packages will be offered to all veterans, with an emphasis on the disabled vet. According to the resort’s website, the retreat is designed by veterans, for veterans.
“It’s so fantastic what they’re doing,” said Mary Naber, president of the North Liberty American Legion Auxiliary. Naber’s close friend and fellow Auxiliary member Karen Fisher is the treasurer for English River Outfitters. Fisher’s husband, Sgt. Paul Fisher, was killed in Iraq in 2003.
At the May 3 event, the Legion will offer $2.00 hamburgers and hot dogs along with drink specials, a raffle, and 50/50 drawing. All proceeds will be donated to the resort. The Legion is located at 2349 Mehaffey Bridge Road, and the event goes from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
“We’re proud to do this for them,” Naber said.
