NLFD responds to two fires at same address

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty’s fire department made two trips to the same house to battle a stubborn fire Sunday.
The North Liberty Fire Department was dispatched to 35 E. Weston Dr. for a building fire at approximately 12:58 a.m. Sunday morning, although the first arriving units found the fire was out upon arrival.
The home was occupied at the time of the fire and did have working smoke detectors, which alerted residents, according to North Liberty Fire Department Lt. Mike Johnston.
Firefighters checked and found no extension of the fire, which was contained to the garage and did not extend into the home.
Later that morning, just before 7 a.m., North Liberty firefighters responded to the same address for an investigation of smoke. Responding units reported visible smoke from the structure. Within minutes after arrival, firefighters found a small smoldering fire in the ceiling. This location was remote from the original fire and was caused by heat transfer of the wires in the ceiling.
Early property damage and content dollar loss is unknown at this time. The original fire cause determination is under investigation but is believed to be accidental.
There were no injuries reported and the residents were allowed to return to their home.
North Liberty units responding to the scene were Engine 112, Quint 114, Rescue 119, and command vehicle 115. The North Liberty Fire Department was assisted by the Johnson County Emergency Communications Center, North Liberty Police Department, Coralville Fire Department, and the Johnson County Ambulance Service.
