North Liberty sewer plant takes state safety award

NORTH LIBERTY– The Water Environment Federation and the Iowa Water Environment Association (formerly the Iowa Water Pollution Control Association) have announced that the City of North Liberty Water Pollution Control Plant is this year’s state winner of the George W. Burke Safety Award.
This award recognizes a treatment facility with an exemplary safety record in order to acknowledge and encourage active and effective safety programs. The city was recognized at the association’s annual meeting in Coralville on June 8. The IAWEA is a nonprofit association of wastewater treatment operators, regulators, engineers, teachers, vendors and students who have joined together to promote the protection of Iowa’s valuable resources of clean water and the environment by providing opportunities for participation, education and training.
The entire city takes pride in safety education and practices as shown through the recent creation of a safety committee and adoption of a comprehension safety manual.
Accepting the award for the City of North Liberty was Dave Ramsey, a graduate of Kirkwood College Water and Wastewater Technology Program with 29 years of experience in water and wastewater treatment. During those years, Ramsey has managed five plant expansions, three wastewater treatment and two water treatment plants.  For the past six years, Ramsey has been the water pollution control plant superintendent for North Liberty’s 4.3 million gallons per day, state-of-the-art membrane bio-reactor plant. The facility was awarded the 2009 Governor’s Iowa Environmental Excellence Award for Water Quality. Ramsey has been a member of the WEF and AWWA for 28 years and holds an Iowa Grade 4 Wastewater Treatment, Grade 4 Water Treatment and Grade 4 Water Distribution certificates.
Ramsey and his staff exceed safety expectations, always ensuring proper safety procedures are in place before starting a task. A great example of their efforts is the department’s equipment inspection and maintenance program. Every piece of equipment within the multi-million-dollar facility is inspected and serviced on a regular basis. This process not only assures that the equipment is running efficiently and safely, but also prevents potential accidents caused by equipment malfunctions.
