A pair of shockers for West softball

IOWA CITY — The West High Women of Troy only needed one inning to win the first game of a varsity double-header at home against the Linn-Mar Lions last Monday. They were punished in the nightcap however, suffering defeat in eight innings.
A 12-run first inning sealed the win for West in game one, which was called after Linn -Mar’s half of the third inning.
The massacre began with Tatum Klein reaching third on an extra base hit and being RBI’d home by Brianna Sturtz. Alise Miller sacrificed to get Sturtz advanced, and Lauren Larson fired a line drive to the third baseman for the second out. Michaela Recker and Lynn Jehle were walked, loading up the bases.
Danielle Chelf came to the plate, looking at three teammates on base, and a pair of outs on the scoreboard. After a number of foul hits, she pulled off the ultimate: a grand slam homerun.
But West wasn’t done yet. Jaylinn Tresslar was walked and proceeded to steal second base. Mikaela Morgan hit an RBI single to bring Tresslar home. Klein returned to the plate as the batting order reached the top again, and promptly scored Morgan while reaching third herself. Sturtz hit an RBI double to score Klein while Miller hit a single moving Sturtz to third. Lauren Larson nailed a single to bring in Sturtz before a single by Michaela Recker loaded up the bases again.
Jehle was walked, bringing in Miller. Chelf came to the plate and again found three runners and two outs. This time, she brought in two on a single. With the damage already done, Linn-Mar brought in a new pitcher. Tresslar faced the new girl in the circle, attempted a bunt, and became the third out.
For West, it was 12 runs on nine hits with two left stranded. The remainder of the game was merely a formality as Linn-Mar went three up, three down in the top of the second as did West. Mackenzie Laux picked up a strike-out in the top of the third and final inning.
The nightcap opened with the Lions bringing in a run in the top of the first inning. Linn Mar put junior Dionna Jensen in the ring to face the West batters. Klein scored in the first and third innings. Laux struck out three consecutive Linn-Mar batters in the top of the fourth, but gave up two hits and two runs in the top of the fifth.
West tied the game at three-all in the bottom of the sixth as Morgan Ryan, running for Chelf, came home on an RBI double off the bat of Caroline Found. A scoreless seventh inning took the game into extra innings.
Linn-Mar scored on a two-RBI single with a West error, making it 5-3 Lions. In their last chance, Recker struck-out, Chelf hit a pop-up that was caught, and Jehle singled. Madi Miller hoped to RBI Jehle, but her long ball was caught, ending the ball game.
Laux worked all eight innings, giving up five runs off eight hits while striking out eight.
West’s record moved to 7-3.
