Pantry serving over 20 area families
SOLON– The Solon Community Pantry is serving 23 families, helping to supplement the weekly food budget for over 65 people. Each week the pantry’s numbers continue to grow with the addition of new families. The community is donating generously, plus the pantry receives weekly deliveries of Table to Table items. In order to maintain a strong inventory of staple goods, the pantry is eligible to receive inventory from the HACAP (Hawkeye Area Community Action Program) Food Reservoir located in Hiawatha and also to collect cereal products from Pepsico in Cedar Rapids. Unfortunately, the pantry does not have available storage space to accommodate these items.
The pantry is looking for additional storage space to support its work at the Solon United Methodist Church (SUMC) or a more permanent pantry location for at least a period of several years. The storage and distribution space at the SUMC has been given on a temporary basis in order to launch the initiative in providing supplemental food resources for area families. The pantry’s service area includes northeast Johnson County, including Solon, Ely, Shueyville and Swisher and it is anticipated service numbers will grow as word of the pantry reaches more families.
The pantry welcome suggestions and any assistance in its search for auxiliary storage space or a more permanent location. Please contact the pantry at 319-340-8865 or 319-543-0015.
