Pointers storm Clear Creek boys

TIFFIN — The Stormin’ Pointers of Center Point-Urbana lived up to their name last Monday evening during a visit to the Clippers of Clear Creek Amana.
A five-run first inning set the stage for a 12-2 Pointer win in a five-inning first half to a varsity doubleheader. Two more CPU runs came in the top of the second, one in the third and two apiece in the fourth and fifth.
The Clippers, struggling this season, found two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Nile Eckermann belted out a two-RBI shot bringing home A.J. Liddell and Dillon Villhauer.
Justin Keith worked the painful first inning on the mound, giving up seven runs on five hits. Tyler Schulte relieved Keith for four innings, giving up five runs on three hits while striking out three Pointers.
It was the same song, second verse, in the first inning of the nightcap as the Pointers again put five runs on the scoreboard. A sixth run in the top of the second seemed to foretell another short game. But the Clippers rallied back with a run in the bottom of the third, two in the fourth and fifth and one in the sixth to knot the game. A scoreless seventh inning sent the game into extra innings with one run each in the eighth.
Schulte RBI’d Eckermann in the third and Dillon Villhauer hit a two-RBI double in the fourth scoring Kam Kahler and Even Hergert. Liddell nailed a two-run double in the fifth bringing in Doug Yansky and Terran Wagner, and Yansky brought in Villhauer with an RBI single in the sixth. Villhauer almost made a homerun, but had to settle for a triple, scoring on the next play.
In the ninth inning, Zach Anderson led-off and was walked. Keith came to the plate but had to wait as the Pointers’ new pitcher warmed up. When play resumed, Keith made a sacrifice bunt which moved Anderson to second. Hergert and Villhauer were both hit by a pitch and loaded up the bases, with nobody out.
Eckermann came to the plate and was walked, bringing Anderson home for the 8-7 win.
Dalton Beckler threw the first three innings giving up six runs and seven hits while retiring three Pointer batters. Eckermann picked up the save with his six innings of work, giving up one run off two hits. Eckermann struck-out an even dozen in the effort.
The split moved the Clippers to 4-8 overall, 4-5 in the WaMaC. CCA will be back on the home diamond on Mon., June 27, for a varsity double-header against Vinton-Shellsburg and also on Wed., June 29, for a pair against Western Dubuque.
