Project Serve the Vets offers an evening of fellowship and appreciation Nov. 10
CEDAR RAPIDS — It is a blessing to live in a free country, and it’s due to the men and women who made selfless sacrifices to protect our freedoms as Americans.
That’s the philosophy of Casey Garner, former Army Ranger and veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan. “What an honor to have soldiers who are willing to do whatever is necessary to keep our nation safe,” Garner said. “What an honor to have veterans in our country who symbolize why this country is so great.”
Garner has mobilized a coalition to show gratitude to all veterans with a special night of appreciation and fellowship. “Project Serve the Vets” will take place Sunday, Nov. 10, from 5 until 9 p.m. at The Sanctuary, 3800 Wilson Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids.
“We have brought together the youth, several area churches, local businesses, ministries, musicians (including the rock/reggae band “The Sundogs”), professional veteran speakers, and various organizations in order to show our gratitude toward all veterans who have served our country so well,” said Garner.
The bottom line, Garner said, is to, “love on the vets, to show Christ-like love and humility.” A five-star, first-class meal will be provided along with care packages.
It’s also an opportunity to connect vets with Christian ministries supportive of veterans, particularly those battling Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or other issues since returning home.
The event is free of any charge to veterans and free transportation is available.
“We are doing everything in our power in order to make this an elegant event where the vets are treated with the respect they deserve, and are served like kings and queens,” said Garner.
The goal is to salute the service of the veterans who made it home, “and to honor the veterans who did not. My only hope,” Garner added, “is that this touches the surface of how thankful we are to these men and women who served.”
Garner can be reached at (319) 431-0582 for any questions, as well as to arrange for transportation.
