TIFFIN– A 20-point rampage by the visiting Williamsburg Raiders Tuesday, Dec. 17, put Matt Haas’ Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers into a hole, one they almost climbed back out of.
Williamsburg led 11-10 after the first period and then went on the aforementioned 20-point tear to lead 31-27 at the half. The Creek girls pulled ahead in the third, but could not extend the lead as the Raiders ended up leading 45-42 going into the final eight minutes.
“Our focus defensively was to contain Paige Greiner best we could, and Kelsey Hall did a tremendous job doing that,” Haas said. “We knew if Greiner got going offensively we were going to be in trouble. Kelsey really made her work for her (eight) points.” Greiner, who averages 17 points per game, was held to only four until very late in the game when she put in four more.
“Offensively we shot the ball extremely well as we hit nine 3-pointers. The problem was, we didn’t value the possession of the basket enough as we had way too many turnovers.” The Clippers gave up the ball 18 times in the contest. Haas added, “it seemed as though every time we hit a big shot in the third quarter, Williamsburg had an answer, or countered with a big shot of their own.”
The loss moves the Clippers to 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the WaMaC. Haas said the numbers don’t tell the whole story of the season so far, and of things to come.
“Despite our current record, the girls are still focused on our season goals as they know there is still a lot of basketball to be played. We’ve played some really good teams so far this season with four of our opponents ranked in the top ten of their respective class.”
Hannah Mougin led the Clippers with a career-high 14 points including four 3-point shots. Hanna Stokes put up a dozen points and eight rebounds, while Lexi Kinnaird had an eight-point night and 10 rebounds. Hall finished the night with six points and four assists.
As a team, CCA shot 9-21 from 3-point land.
