IOWA CITY– Tuesday, May 20, was Senior Night for the West High Women of Troy and five of them put in seven of West’s 10 goals for a 10-0 win over struggling Waterloo East.
The bulk of the damage was done in the first half as West took a 9-0 lead into the break. Meredith Arpey nailed the final goal in the first minute of the second half for the victory.
Eleni Katz got the party started for West, scoring just past two minutes into the match with a light tap into the net. Thirty seconds later Alli Peterson did the same thing to put West up, 2-0. Elizabeth Yang scored on a rocket from outside the box with 34:02 left in the period, Peterson got her second goal of the evening with 31:43 remaining while Yang picked up her second goal a minute later.
Reagan Steigleder, a freshman, scored on a long-range shot to make it 6-0, fellow freshman Emma Cooper made a successful attack on the East keeper with 7:36 to go, making it 7-0.
Perhaps the most significant goal of the match came with 6:05 remaining when Bailey Ryan scored. Ryan has served as team manager for the past couple of seasons, and took to the field for Senior Night. After bouncing a shot off of the top bar of the goal, and later off of the corner post, Ryan scored as the keeper bobbled the ball and tipped it into the back of the net.
“She finally got to score her goal,” coach David Rosenthal said. “She’s been our manager the last few years. She was trying and we’re glad we were able to get that for her. She’s an incredibly special kid for our whole program, to get that was really nice for her.”
Sophomore Heelah Nadler rounded out the first half with a long-range goal with 2:23 remaining in the half.
Most of the West High bench saw playing time, but as Rosenthal said, “more than anything I wanted to have the seniors get in there and do some things. I had some seniors from my JV-1 and JV-2 in there, you know, to give them a little bit of glory, an opportunity to play with the varsity team. I’m glad we were able to do that for them.” About the seniors he said, “this is a great senior group. They’ve gone to state three times in a row; this will be the fourth time, hopefully. They got to open this field and play on it for two years now. They’re showing some incredible leadership going into the final run.”
Seniors Beth Crow, Eleni Katz, Meredith Arpey, Alli Peterson, Anna Hausler, Bailey Ryan, Sarah Kang, Elizabeth Kang, Emma Goldman and Callie Seylar were recognized before the match.
The Women of Troy will face City High on Wednesday, June 4, for a regional quarterfinal round match at home starting at 6 p.m. The winner plays either Muscatine or Ottumwa at West High on Monday, June 9, for the right to go to the state tournament in Des Moines.
