Sheila Kavanaugh was born May 23, 1949, the daughter of Robert J. and Ada (Wilson) Burns in Iowa City. She attended Cosgrove grade school and graduated from Regina High School and Iowa City Mercy School of Nursing. She married John Kavanaugh on Aug. 28, 1970. She worked for many years as a registered nurse in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids hospitals and taught nursing at Kirkwood Community College.
Sheila and her family moved in 1983 from Cedar Rapids to the Portland, Maine area, where she continued her nursing career and most recently specialized in oncology for the past eight years. She made a tremendous difference in the lives of her patients and was highly respected among her colleagues.
Sheila was a wonderful and loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was a talented seamstress who made many beautiful quilts for family and friends. She loved the ocean, nature traveling, the Red Sox and warm cups of tea with her dear friends, but her greatest joys in life were her children and her grandson.
Memorials may be made in honor of Sheila to Amy’s Treat, an organization dedicated to enriching the journey of those living with cancer. www.amystreat.com
