The Hawkeye wrestlers took every match last week at Carver-Hawkeye Arena against Buffalo, winning 46-0. That included two pins, six majors and two technical falls.
“That’s how it should be,” said Iowa head coach Tom Brands. “It doesn’t matter who the opponent is. You may not get a shutout every time, but you strive for it. We still have weights where we have to be ready to go the entire match.”
That should be a good warm-up for top-ranked Penn State this Saturday at Carver.
Iowa’s first three wrestlers set the tone by getting takedowns in the first couple of seconds against Buffalo.
Cory Clark got a major at 125, Tony Ramos a tech fall at 133 and Josh Dziewa a major at 141.
Mike Kelly and former West High Trojan Derek St. John got back-to-back pins at 149 and 157.
It was good to see Bobby Telford back at heavyweight.
Bobby hasn’t wrestled a dual until last week and he won a major at 16-3.
“It’s good to have Telford on the mat,” said coach Brands. “I like to see falls, quick falls, but I also like to see it go longer just to see him wrestle.”
