Solon boys’ golf gets back on par at WaMaC
SOLON– The Solon boys’ golf team grabbed the WaMaC East Division title on May 2, edging the competition by four strokes at the WaMaC Divisional Tournament held at Lake Macbride Golf Course.
The win for the Spartans comes after a frustrating week of play that involved four meets.
“This win means a lot for a couple of reasons,’ said Solon boys’ golf coach Adam Stahle. “The week prior was a very busy week, with the four meets plus the high school prom. With all of those distractions we did not play particularly well, making a lot of mental mistakes. However, for these boys to come back, refocus and to play that well speaks volumes about their potential. More importantly it helps the boys gain some confidence heading down the final stretch of the season”
Solon finished the day with a team score of 160, four stokes ahead of second place Maquoketa.
“Overall, I was very pleased with the way we played today. We had all six kids shoot below 43,” Stahle said.
Lucas Bruene was a medalist for the Spartans and led the way posting a nine-hole score of 38. Matt Hand came in with a score of 40, Kyle Cave and Dillon Baker posted a score 41 apiece, Todd Berthing shot a 42, and Austin Kramer finished with a 43.
“There was not one individual performance that stood out. What stood out more to me was the camaraderie the boys showed when Lucas Bruene was playing his playoff hole. All five guys walked the fairway, showing their support for their fellow teammate,” said Stahle.
Solon carried the momentum from the win into the Mid Prairie Invite on May 3. The Spartans won the event by a mammoth 33-stroke margin.
“I am hoping these wins will be the turning point in the season,” said Stahle.
Solon finished second at the Boys Sectional Golf Meet at Saddleback Golf Course Thursday, May 12, and will advance to district play at Williamsburg Stone Creek Golf Course Friday, May 20.
