Solon closes out regular season with loss to Regina
SOLON– The Solon girls hosted their last home soccer game Thursday, May 22, with a 4-1 win against Mid-Prairie.
The Lady Spartans scored three of the four goals in the first half and the fourth just minutes into the second half. Credit for the goals went to seniors Anna Seydel, Alyssa Stotler and Brianna Pike and sophomore Jade Flansberg, with assists by Allison Koffron, Pike and Seydel.
Friday, May 23, Solon traveled to Williamsburg and came home with a 2-1 win. Coach John Tucker shifted the starting lineup to accommodate the Spartans’ trip to the state track finals and to give a few other teammates time to heal before heading into the postseason district games.
On Tuesday, May 27, the Lady Spartans traveled to Iowa City Regina to close out the last game of regular season schedule before heading into their postseason district games. Freshman Josie Durr scored an incredible long shot to tie the game in the 39th minute of the first half. Although there were numerous shots on Regina’s net, the second half found the Solon Lady Spartans playing a defensive game. Senior goalie Katie Silberstein protected the net from numerous shots on the goal that would make any warrior proud, but was unable to stop Regina from getting the winning goal for a score of 2-1.
Solon’s 12-5 record was rewarded with a bye in the first round of districts. Solon will take on the winner of Tuesday’s game between Mount Vernon and Anamosa. The second round in Region 6 of Class 1A teams will take place Friday, June 6, and Solon will have the home field advantage.
The third round will also take place at Spartan field on Monday, June 9, with the winner of that game proceeding to the state tournament.
