Solon controls both sides of the ball for 45-7 win over CCA

TIFFIN– The Spartans were in control.
Solon’s varsity football team was firing on all cylinders Friday night, defeating Clear Creek Amana 45-7 in Tiffin.
The Spartans scored three times in the first quarter and three more times in the third to snag their first conference win of the season, moving to a 3-1 record overall.
“I believe we controlled the line of scrimmage and that was fundamental to the outcome of the game,” noted head coach Kevin Miller.  “When we are able to sustain and control the line of scrimmage we are a very solid football team.”
Solon generated 520 total yards of offense in a balanced attack– 284 yards on the ground and 236 in the air. Senior quarterback Rory Siddell was on target, completing 10-11 passes for an average of 23.6 yards per catch. Siddell was also the leading ground gainer with 91 yards on 17 carries.
Solon’s quarterback led off the scoring with a 1-yard run, and scored again on another 10-yard keeper in the third.
Tim Lance and Jordan Wymer both scored on the ground in the first (on runs of 16 and 25 yards), and Josh Proehl tacked on a 23-yard field goal to give Solon a 24-0 halftime lead.
Colton Dall took a pass from Siddell in the flat and the bubble screen erupted for a 78-yard touchdown in the third quarter. After a 1-yard touchdown run by Lance, the Spartans held a 45-0 advantage going into the fourth quarter and the continuous clock was running for the second time this season.
Lance had 55 yards on 10 carries, while Aaron Shulista gained 66 on seven attempts. Wymer added 45 yards on seven tries.
Four of Solon’s receivers had two catches each, with Dall leading the pack with 89 yards. Nathan Hawkins (48 yards), Austin Holub (38 yards) and Chris McNutt (29 yards) joined Dall with two receptions each.
The defense held the Clippers scoreless until the fourth quarter.
CCA was held to a net gain of 12 yards on the ground for the game, an average of 0.5 yards per carry.
The Clippers managed only 179 yards of total offense, most of it coming from a 14-23 night by quarterback Konrad Moore. A good chunk came in the first half on a 43-yard hookup with Tanner Bandy, part of a Clipper drive that ended with a missed field goal. Bandy had 100 receiving yards for CCA on eight catches, while no other Clipper collected more than 30 yards through the air.
Junior Danny Whitmore was credited with three of Solon’s five solo sacks, with the others attributed to Eli DeWitt and Jonah Kuntz.
“I do feel that we are improving,” coach Miller said of his team. “With that said, we realize that there is significant improvement that still needs to occur. The last few weeks we have put a premium on fundamentals and technique.  Our performance on both sides is directly related to the time spent specifically on fundamentals.”
The Spartans are executing better overall, he added. “We just have to concentrate on making daily and weekly improvement.”
