Solon Middle School to sponsor injury prevention program
Solon Middle School will sponsor a ThinkFirst Iowa injury prevention program for their students on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 1:50 p.m.
Each year about 600 people in Iowa will become paralyzed from a spinal cord injury. Another 5,000 will suffer traumatic brain injuries. Automobiles, motorcycles and diving injuries are the major causes. Many of these injuries will happen to young people ages 15-24.
The presentation includes a ThinkFirst movie, a factual segment and a talk by a VIP (Voice for Injury Prevention) who has received either a brain or spinal cord injury who will share their personal experiences with the students.
The program emphasizes that the following safety activities may help prevent a brain or spinal cord injury:
Always wear your safety belt.
Check the depth of water and check for objects below the surface before you jump or dive.
Drive chemically free.
Always wear a helmet when participating in contact sports and when rollerblading, riding a motorcycle, snowmobile, skateboard, ATV or bicycle.
Avoid situations with potential for violence.
ThinkFirst with all of your activities, work or play.
