Solon picks up first two losses

SOLON– Solon’s varsity baseball team picked up its first two losses of the season last Friday hosting No. 9 Davenport Assumption.
The Spartan bats hit a quiet spell, and that was enough to drop both ends of a home doubleheader, 1-4 and 4-6.
Marshall Koehn went 2-4 in the first game, during which Solon was limited to six hits. Nick Day contributed the lone RBI.  Ryan Butler pitched well, striking out seven batters over six innings, but picked up his first loss of the season taking his record to 4-1.
Game two was more of the same as Solon left runners on base in several innings.  Day had two hits and Koehn added a home run (his third of the season).  Day picked up the loss on the mound, striking out five in seven innings.
It was smoother sailing earlier in the week, when the Spartans picked up twinbill wins against West Delaware (Monday) and Vinton-Shellsburg (Thursday).
The Spartans made the most of eight hits against West Delaware in the opening 4-0 win. Koehn was 2-3 with a double, Shawn Olson was 2-3 and Tyler Smith hit his fourth home run of the season, racking up three RBI in the process.
Brandon Shulista moved to 6-0 on the season with the win, striking out nine and scattering four hits over seven innings.
Smith stayed hot in the second game, going 3-4 with a double and two RBI, while Olson and Colin Stebral each added two-baggers during the 5-3 victory.
Ryan Butler allowed only four hits for the win, his fourth of the year.
The bats were plenty active against Vinton-Shellsburg Thursday, especially in the 14-4 nightcap.
Solon won the first game 6-3 after both Koehn (3-4) and Day went yard (for Day, his 10th of the season). Smith was 2-4, Olson went 2-3 and Butler added a double, providing run support for Koehn’s pitching. He went six innings, striking out eight, while Brandon Shulista pitched an inning of relief, striking out two.
The Spartans pounded out 13 hits in the second game, giving pitcher Jordan Siddell plenty of room to work. Siddell allowed five hits and gave up three earned runs while striking out three to improve to 4-0.
Seven different Solon players collected RBI on the night, led by Derrick Loveless who was 4-4 with a double and a home run (his fifth). Koehn and Shulista were also perfect at the plate, each with a double.
The Spartans are now 21-2 on the season, ranked No. 1 in Class 3A and sitting on top of the WaMaC East standings.
