Window display for August

The Iowa Chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility will be returning to the Solon Public Library for a display entitled, “Nuclear Neighborhoods: 11,000 Generations.” This multi-media exhibit will be on display from Aug. 6, the anniversary of the Hiroshima nuclear bomb explosion, and will continue through Labor Day weekend. On display will be art and artifacts exploring the major themes of today’s nuclear age. Included in the exhibit will be photographs, period newspapers, personal writing and other items showing how the nuclear age affects us all today. Also included will be items related to nuclear power and nuclear medicine, both of which are in the Solon neighborhood. The Solon display is part of a multiple site event, with additional exhibits at the University of Iowa Hardin Medical Library, the Kendall Gallery at the Iowa Memorial Union, the Iowa City Public Library and at area businesses. The display is informative for all ages.

Staff profile

Our continuing series of profiles on part-time staff members continues this week with Kris McAtee. Kris has been doing custodial work (cleaning the meeting room, restrooms, and lobby) for the library for about two years. She grew up in Cedar Rapids and moved to Solon with her parents and graduated from high school here. She met her husband here and they’ve been married for 31 years and have three children: Samantha (20), Lillee (15), and James (14). Previously Kris worked as a medical assistant, but after deciding to be a stay-at-home mom, she started a home daycare business and has been doing that for 19 years. She says that the best part of her part-time job with the library is that she can set her own hours. Kris also enjoys spending together time with her family and also scrapbooking and taking care of her flowers. Fun fact about Kris? She sometimes calls herself, “Mrs. Doolittle” because they have four dogs and a cat: a Rottweiler named Hazel, two Shih-tzu’s (Biskit and Gravee) and a grand-dog Maggie (a Bishon) and a grand-kitty named Mittens. Thanks, Kris, for helping keep our library tip-top.
