Solon Public Library

Opening hours change

September means the library returns to its regular hours. Monday through Thursdays the library will now open at noon and close at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday hours remain the same, 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. The library is closed on Sunday.

New window display

After a month’s absence, September brings a new Toni Russo designed window to the library. “Engine House” is a very special display saluting fire-fighters, first-responders and their families. The window will have a collection of antique fire memorabilia collected from area fire-fighters and their departments. Several iconic items will be featured in the window– a Dalmatian, an authentic brass pole, and even a plate of pancakes served by the Boy Scouts. This is one you won’t want to miss.

Early out programs

The first early out program will be on Thursday, Sept. 5, and it will be a viewing of the newly released animated movie “Zambezia” (G) at 1 p.m. The program will end at 2:45 p.m. The early out programs are designed for grades K-4, but other ages will be admitted as space allows. Parents or caregivers are responsible for getting students to the library and picking them up when the activity is over.

Halloween costume and décor sale

This year the friends of the library is starting a new fall fundraiser, which will be a Halloween Costume and Décor Sale on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. until noon. The primary focus will be gently used children’s Halloween costumes, but there will also be costumes for older kids and adults, along with masks, and other Halloween décor. Many of these items were donated by the family of the late Don Ochs, a great library supporter and Halloween fan. During the month of September, the library will still accept donations for this sale.

Volunteer profile

Our continuing series of profiles of long-time volunteers continues this week with the Haugland family. All three children (Rebecca, 19; Rachel 16; and Jonathan, 13) have been or are active volunteers at the library. Their dad, Brett, was raised in Solon and mom, Lisa, is originally from Cedar Rapids, and the family moved to Solon in 2001. Lisa has an AAS degree from Kirkwood and home-schools the kids. Because of that, they were always at the library checking out tons of books, which led to volunteering. Rebecca was the first to start volunteering weekly starting in about fourth grade, and Rachel followed the tradition when she was in fourth grade. As junior volunteers, they did whatever was needed– craft prep for storytime, cleaning, shelving, covering new books and helped at the annual Halloween party and Gingerbread House event. Librarian Kris Brown calls Rachel and Rebecca their “go-to girls” because they would do whatever was asked and do it well. Even before Lisa joined the friends board in 2011, she and the kids would volunteer to help set up for the friends book sales. Jonathan started volunteering in 2011 (sixth grade) and helps prepare for Storytime crafts and other odd jobs as needed. Lisa also works part-time at Solon Assisted Living, Rebecca works part-time at Thiesen’s, Rachel works part-time at Sedlacek Upholstery, and Jonathan raises chickens and sells farm-fresh eggs as his part-time job. Although Rebecca is a sophomore at Kirkwood (will be transferring to ISU to complete a degree in agricultural studies), she still helps out with special projects from time to time and Rachel is currently a member of TAB (Teen Advisory Board) at the library. The family is also very active in 4-H and Rebecca once brought rabbits from home to show the children during a Storytime. Lisa enjoys historical fiction, biographies, mysteries and cookbooks; Rebecca’s favorites are biographies and mysteries; Rachel enjoys Sarah Dessen and Nicholas Sparks novels, and Jonathan enjoys action books and military history. Fun-facts about the Hauglands? They have a 160 pound dog named Sarge, Rebecca is an Irish Step Dancer and was the 2012 Johnson County Fair Queen, Rachel is also an Irish Step Dancer and one of her hobbies is welding and she enjoys working with power tools, Jonathan caught an albino catfish in their farm pond this summer, and Lisa enjoys vacations where she can visit lighthouses. We really appreciate all the hours this great family has donated to the library over the years.
