Mini-Tree Decorating Contest

Get into the Holiday Spirit by coming in to view the trees entered in the Mini-Tree Decorating Contest. Vote in the penny jar Popular Vote contest – whoever gets the most votes (i.e. pennies/cash) in their jar will win a $10 prize. Silent Auction for these trees (all under 4 feet) begins after Thanksgiving and continue through Dec. 14 at noon. Each tree will also have a “Buy It Now” price on it, and you can take it home with you anytime starting Dec. 3 for that price, if you don’t want to wait for the auction to end. All proceeds go to the Friends of the Solon Library to be used for purchases benefiting the library.

Christmas jar mix orders due next Wednesday, Nov. 27

Deadline for Christmas jar mix preorders is Wednesday, Nov. 27. These make great gifts for those hard-to-buy-for folks on your list, teacher gifts, or office Secret Santa gifts. Payment and order forms must be turned in at the library by 8 p.m. Your gift jars will be available for pick-up at the library beginning on Saturday, Dec. 14. Order forms are available at the library circulation desk, website or by e-mailing Friends of the Library @ SolonLibrFriends@aol.com.

Fall jar mixes available for pick up

If you ordered any fall jar mixes, they are available for pickup at the library anytime during normal operating hours.

Thanksgiving Holiday hours

The library will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and have its regular weekly hours during the balance of the week.

Santa visit Saturday, Dec. 3

Santa will be visiting the library on Tuesday, Dec. 3, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Bring the kids or grandkids and your cameras for some candid shots as your child has a visit with Santa. There will be a craft to do in the meeting room and Santa will have a treat for all his visitors. Parents and grandparents can do a little shopping at the Friends sale tables at the same time.

Friends Holiday Sale

The Friends of the Solon Library will have tables of gift-quality books, holiday decor, and other giftable items at the library in December. As items are purchased, more items will be put out for sale. Items will continue to be on sale during the library’s regular hours through Dec. 21 while they last.

Dec. 5 early out movie

The originally scheduled film, “Despicable Me 2,” will not be available on Dec. 5 for the Early Out program, so it is being re-scheduled to the first Early-Out date in January. nstead, we will be showing “Planes,” a Disney animated adventure from the creators of “Cars.”

Monthly adult reading prize

Every time you read a book, be sure to drop an entry form into the drawing for the monthly adult reading prize, sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Jackie Eggar was the lucky winner for the month of October. Each month a name is drawn for a $10 cash prize.
Thanks also to Bridge Bank for sponsoring additional prizes for adults during Summer Reading Program. Dee Swartzendruber (pictured with Brewery co-owner Doug Goettsch) used her prize for an anniversary dinner at the new Big Grove Brewery.

Window display

The holiday display window will feature the classic “Peter and the Wolf”, composed by Sergei Prokofiev in 1936. The window will feature a very special guest on loan from the University of Iowa’s Natural History Museum. We still need help, though, to gather a few items:
• A (small) French Horn
• Russian items, especially holiday ornaments or decorations
• Costume items for Peter & his grandfather – caps, hats, tunic, boots,
• Copies of “Peter and the Wolf” that you may have – books or record albums.
If you have any of these items, please contact window artist Toni Russo at 644-2777 as soon as possible.
