Solon Public Library

Thanks to our library volunteers

This week is National Volunteer Recognition Week and we want to send a shout-out to our terrific group of volunteers. We are lucky to have 22 adult and seven student volunteers who help us with a variety of tasks on a regular basis. These dedicated folks serve on the library board, the Friends of the Library and the Solon Library Foundation; all in support of the library and the programs and services that we provide. We also have volunteers who help with book processing, overdues, displays, shelving and many of the daily tasks that help to make this library the wonderful place that it is. Thanks so much for your energy, your skills and your commitment.

National Library Week

We are also celebrating National Library Week from April 13 through 19. Show your support of libraries in your community by signing the “Declaration of Support” that we will have on display in both public and school libraries this week. It’s hard to imagine what life would be like without the library and all of the resources that we share within each facility. The signed documents will be sent, at the end of the week, to the American Library Association.

This month’s Money Smart programs extended to April 19

Make plans to attend the two Money Smart programs that we have scheduled for the 19th in the library meeting room. Mary Weinand, a family finance specialist, will have some great suggestions for tightening up your food budget. Paul Deaton, local Solon resident and writer, gave up his nine to five job to focus on his writing. He will describe his creative methods of putting food on the table and how he covers his expenses to survive and thrive.
9:30 a.m. “Spend Smart, Eat Smart” with Mary M. Weinand, a Family Finance Specialist w/Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.
11 a.m. “Alternative Living: focus on finances” with Paul Deaton.

Author Larry Baker visits April 23

Award winning Iowa author Larry Baker will be reading from his new novel “The Education of Nancy Adams” on April 23 at the Solon Public Library at 7 p.m.
“The Education of Nancy Adams” is the story of a woman living in her dead parents’ house in 1996. She is about to go to work at the Florida high school from which she graduated twenty years earlier. Her new boss was her teacher back in 1976, a man she adored. She was seventeen then. He was twenty-seven. He is married now, she is a childless widow. Her own education is about to begin again as she enters an adolescent world of hormones, rumors, and teenage drama, where students are sometimes more mature than their teachers, and where she finally learns the truth about the man she thought she loved.
Baker’s appearance at the Solon Library is the first of a special Iowa library tour that includes stops at libraries in Ely, Monticello, Anamosa and Mt. Vernon. This is Mr. Baker’s second visit to the Solon Public Library. In 2001, Mr. Baker helped us celebrate our grand opening with a visit to talk about his first book, “The Flamingo Rising.”
“The Flamingo Rising”, was a Barnes and Noble finalist for the Great New Voices Award for 1997. It was also a Los Angeles Times Top 100 selection for 1997. In addition to being adapted by Hallmark for a television movie in 2001, it was selected by the Iowa Center for the Book to represent Iowa at the National Book Festival in Washington, D.C., in 2010. That year also brought another honor for this book, its inclusion on the American Library Association’s banned books list.
Larry’s second novel, “Athens/America,” was even more controversial, turning Iowa fact into fiction in a story that has provoked a wide range of responses. Love it or hate it, as some do, it has become, in the words of one bookstore publicist, a cult classic.

Monthly drawing winner

Congratulations to Lorraine Melchert, who is the March winner of our drawing. The Friends of the Solon Library provide $10 in cash each month for this drawing. If you are an adult patron of the Solon library and you’ve finished a book that you’ve checked out from the library (audio books count, too) then please enter your name in our monthly drawing.
