Solon Public Library

Early-out craft program

On school early-out days, the library offers free programming for school-aged children. On Thursday, April 18, we will be making a clay craft project. Program starts at 1 p.m. and pick up time is 2 p.m.

“Win With Reading” month

April is “Win with Reading” month at Solon schools. Library director Kris Brown stopped by Lakeview Elementary to read to second graders on April 10. Each student has a reading goal for the month and these kids really read lots of books. Stop in at the library if you need more… they’ll help you reach your goal. School media specialist Kathy Kaldenberg will be bringing third and fourth graders to visit the library later this month as a part of their poetry unit.

Garden news

On Monday, April 29, from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m., the Solon Garden Club is sponsoring a program on “Water Wise Gardening.” It features Linn County Master Gardener Deb Walser, and she will discuss how to best deal with trees and gardening in drought conditions.
The Library Landscaping Committee has also organized its annual flower bed clean-up at the library. Help them get ready for spring planting by showing up at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 20, for one-two hours. Bring your own gloves, and help us make quick work of the clean-up.

Book sales update

The Friends of the Solon Library will no longer be having a used book sale on Memorial Day Weekend. Our book sales will now be on the first Saturdays of February and August. We will still accept donations of gently used books throughout the year. Remember the used book cart is always available and well-stocked in the lobby and we frequently have a special interest or holiday themed extra cart. Currently we have a special cart of books on hunting and fishing for the outdoor enthusiasts.

Calling all firefighters

This fall our display window designer Toni Russo will be creating a salute to firefighters and first responders. If you have any old-time fire-fighting memorabilia that you would loan for the display window or ideas for the window, please contact Toni at 319-644-2777.

Donate your Coke Rewards® points

For over a year and a half we have been collecting My Coke Rewards® points donated by our patrons. These points are currently being used to fund seventeen different magazine subscriptions including People, Entertainment Weekly, Sports Illustrated, Bloomberg Business Week, and Wired. Using these free points frees up funding to purchase other items, so please keep donating. There’s a red collection can at the circulation desk for your convenience.

NEIBORS updates

The NEIBORS link on the library webpage allows patrons free access to downloadable e-books and audio-books. NEIBORS has recently updated its site and some patrons have experienced issues where they had not previously. This is most likely due to your web-browser not being compatible with the new NEIBORS software. If you have any difficulties using this service and cannot find an answer for your problem in the help sections on NEIBORS, please send an email to webmaster@solon.lib.ia.us or call the library.
