Solon Retirement Village 40th anniversary carnival set for Saturday, July 27
SOLON– The Solon Retirement Village (SRV), home to a full continuum of care for seniors in Solon, plans to celebrate its 40th anniversary this year with a free community carnival on Saturday, July 27.
Festivities begin at 4 p.m. on the east lawn of Solon Assisted Living and include free popcorn, face painting, a balloon artist, inflatable games and prizes. Entertainment includes a gymnastics exhibition by Kids 1st Gym and music. The evening will wrap up with a movie shown on an outdoor inflatable movie screen. A concession trailer will also be selling a full menu of dinner items, beverages and treats.
Located on the east side of Highway 1 in Solon, the Solon Nursing Care Center opened in 1973. Shortly thereafter, it expanded capacity from the original 42 beds to 68 beds with the addition of a south hallway and a chapel. Independent condominiums for seniors were added with Terrace Lane in the 1980s and Terrace Lane Glen in the 1990s. In 2010, the Solon Assisted Living Village was built and connected to the east side of the care center, providing additional needed services requested by the community.
In November 2011, SRV received approval from the State of Iowa to add 24 new beds to the campus, including a memory care residence (12 beds, opened in May 2012) and a skilled therapy center (12 beds, opened in August 2012), for rehabilitation services; in December 2012, the campus also received Medicare approval to offer outpatient therapy.
The Solon Retirement Village is a private corporation owned by shareholders, many of whom are residents of Solon. A volunteer board of directors oversees its management. Administrator Melissa Reed, LNHA/MSW, spearheaded the construction of assisted living and the recent expansion of the nursing home.
“We have grown rapidly over the past three years,” Reed stated, “and are excited about the future as we continue to support, assist and care for those from Solon and the surrounding areas. We also recognize and appreciate the numerous volunteers and family members who have assisted by sharing their talents throughout these 40 years. We are thankful to be a part of this community, and look forward to celebrating our 40th Anniversary on July 27.”
