Wednesday Feb. 17, meeting

Seniors, join us for the Wednesday, Feb. 17, meeting for a discussion regarding cooking for one– plus several more issues, senior financial issues, and security issues if you live alone. Also watch for April evening meeting dates with a inancial advisor’s input. Plan to come join us and see what the excitement is all about from 9 a.m. to whenever.

Wednesday Night Meals

Wednesday Night Meals at the Methodist Church throughout the upcoming school year are for everybody. Serving starts at 5:30 p.m. and donations are accepted. Come to dine and visit with friends.

Doctor’s appointments

We are organizing a pool of people to volunteer to take seniors, and others in need this service, to appointments in Iowa City and Coralville. When a ride is requested, the volunteer would be asked if available the day and time period. If not, the call would be routed to the next person on the volunteer list. Transportation to appointments is a need in the community and we hope to provide it soon. Call 319-624-2710, or any of the Senior Advocates, to learn more about becoming a driver volunteer.

Meal and Movie

The next movie date Friday, Feb. 26, will present “Iron Jawed Angels” starring Hillary Swank as Alice Paul. Paul challenged newly elected President Wilson, in 1910, for support of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. Carrie Chapman Catt, played by Angelica Houston, participates in the movement as young defiant activists risk their lives in the struggle for the cause.

Senior computer class

Seniors needing to brush up on computer skills or starting from square one should call the library, 319-624-2678, and enroll for a free computer class.

Get moving

Don’t forget to visit Our Lord’s Church Tuesdays at 10 a.m., for some exercises to loosen up and keep moving through the week. Carol Tobias has organized a great routine, not too strenuous, designed to help keep you fit. Drop in and try it out.

Mini-bus availabilities

The Advocates extend an invitation to groups, individuals and organizations, not necessarily seniors, to use the mini-bus for area day trips. The Senior Advocates will coordinate the scheduling of each trip with the requesting party and will provide volunteer drivers. Base charge is $25 plus $0.70 per mile for requested trips. For more information regarding this service, call 319-855-9797 or 319-624-2710.

Volunteer for seniors

Looking for a rewarding volunteer experience? Plan to attend one of the Senior Advocate meetings held the third Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m., at Our Lord’s Church. Find out the things we do for seniors and how you could contribute. Help our senior population gain more mobility, sociability and meet new friends.

Dave Frisbie is available to assist with chores requiring a ladder or step stool, with lifting or moving bulky items, with hauling items requiring a truck and with home safety inspections. Do you need a mattress flipping? Contact Dave at 319-624-6024.
