Solon teachers get 4% increase with new contract
SOLON– Teachers have unanimously ratified a 3.9 percent raise in their new contracts with the Solon Community School District. The two sides reached an agreement that will also bump pay for coaches and activity staff for extra duty days.
Solon’s union representative, high school teacher Karry Putzy, said the agreement was good for students as well as teachers because it allows teachers to be more engaged and not worried about insurance and job security.
She said collective bargaining was important for Iowa and helps to create a better environment in the schools.
Putzy said the teachers in Solon all have a voice in the negotiating process. Staff was polled about a new contract in the fall.
There are no bonuses, no changes to insurance, and no early retirement package in the contract.
Revised language in the contract changes the district pay date to the fifth of the month and new job openings will be announced through email instead of on paper.
The school board will vote on the contract on May 14 at 6 p.m.
