Spartans can’t pull out wins
SOLON– It was a tough loss.
With the score knotted 30-30 at halftime and 46-all going into the fourth quarter, the Solon boys’ basketball team had a chance against Dyersville Beckman last week.
The Spartans came away on the losing end of a 66-64 final at Dyersville Tuesday, and were unable to find the groove in an eight-point loss at home Friday against Maquoketa.
Turner Wentzien scored 25 points and was 7-7 from the line for Solon at Dyersville. Joe Weeks added 18 points. Jake Morris led the team with eight rebounds. Ryan Kunkel added seven.
Beckman’s Travis Gudenkauf had 28 points on 9-13 shooting, including 4-5 from the three-point arc, to lead all scorers. The Blazers out-rebounded the Spartans, 33-25, and shot 18 more free throws than Solon.
Down by nine points at the half, Solon couldn’t bring it much closer against Maquoketa Friday night in a 55-47 loss.
Weeks had 14 points, while Rory Siddell added 13 (going 3-3 from long range) and Wentzien contributed 10 points. Weeks also led the team in rebounding with eight.
The Spartans have lost five of their last six games and head into the final three games of the season with an overall record of 9-9. After hosting Anamosa Tuesday, Solon faces Vinton-Shellsburg Friday, Feb.10 and ends the regular season with Williamsburg Thursday, Feb. 16.
