A super time; free event brings NL together for the big game

NORTH LIBERTY — For the sixth year, football fans gathered in the Gerdin Conference Center in the basement of the North Liberty Community Center for “the big game.”
Superbowl 44, with the New Orleans Saints taking on and defeating the Indianapolis Colts, was projected onto two walls for the big-screen effect. A community potluck provided supper for the masses, and activities were set up for the youngest, including a broadcast of “the Puppy Bowl.”
“Every year, we get people who are amazed that this is a totally free event,” Corinne Lemmage with the North Liberty Telecommunications Department said. Lemmage and Director Cheryle Caplinger added that all food, drinks, commemorative T-shirts, and prizes are donated to the event. Donors included Rage Grafix (T-shirts) and Genesis Church (pizza), as well as many other area businesses, restaurants, and banks.
“The focus is to provide something free for the community to do,” Caplinger said of the alcohol-free, family-friendly event.
The event averages around 300 participants each year. This time organizers ran out of the commemorative shirts prior to kick-off, and a crowd of 200 was estimated at the start of the second quarter.
