The taming of the flue

NORTH LIBERTY– The Renshaw House is getting a new ‘do.
As part of the house’s ongoing upkeep, the City of North Liberty recently contracted with Bryan Bunting Construction, Inc., to put a new roof on the aging structure. The building also received new soffits, rafter tail and repairs to its crumbling chimney.
The City of North Liberty owns the property, and after a plea from the North Bend Historical Committee, agreed to maintain the house with the hope of renovating it for future use. The city has set aside money in its annual budget for necessary repairs to maintain the integrity of the structure. Funding for additional repairs and rehabilitation, however, will likely come from grants and other state programs, said Assistant City Administrator Tracey Mulcahey. The city received $8,000 from the Great Places grant program, for example, to help pay for the $25,000 roof replacement.
Mulcahey said a consultant will be contracted to apply for registry of the house on the National Historic Register.
Bryan Bunting, owner of Bunting Construction, Inc., said he has been in the residential and commercial roofing business for over 25 years, and the Renshaw House was a unique project.
“It was important for this roof to be very high quality,” said Bunting, who said he used a high-end, impact-resistant CertainTeed brand shingle. The manufacturer of quality home products provided Bunting with a $700 voucher to apply to the Renshaw project, which Bunting said helped him secure the bid for the city’s contract.
“This house is going to look really nice when the place gets cleaned up,” said Bunting.
