Third in a row for CCA

TIFFIN– The Creek boys, under the leadership of coach Steve Ottoson, picked up their third win in a row Jan. 31, knocking off Independence, 58-29.
The Clippers picked-off Williamsburg on the road 60-51 the week before and got by Waterloo Columbus on Friday, Jan. 27, by a 61-54 margin.
Hosting Independence, the Clippers got off to a strong start and never looked back.
Dillon Villhauer put CCA on the board with a field goal and a layup off a steal for a 4-0 lead early in the first period. Tyler Schulte’s two-pointer and Clay Miller’s three-bomb and field goal put the Clippers up, 11-0. Nash Stopko and Justin Keith added baskets to give CCA an 18-4 lead at the end of the period.
Kam Kahler joined Keith, Miller and Stopko in second period scoring as the Clippers took a 32-10 lead into the halftime break.
Keith led-off for the Clippers with back-to-back buckets in the third period while a Schulte basket made it 38-12. A second Villhauer steal was driven downtown and poured in to give CCA a 46-23 advantage after an attempt at a rally by Independence. The Clippers took the quarter 48-23 going into the final eight minutes.
Following a pair of baskets by Kahler, a two-pointer by Lukas Jones and a Miller bucket, Ottoson put in his reserves for the final five minutes. Josh Berner, Kyle Kisling, Tony Pederson, Nick Strasser and Zach Smith closed out the game for the Clippers. Strasser put in the final shot of the night, to the roaring delight of the student section. Unfortunately, it fell just a bit too late to count.
Miller led the Clippers with 13 points, Keith had 12 and Stopko added 11. Villhauer contributed eight points, Kahler had a six-point night and Schulte put in four. It was two points each for Berner and Jones.
“That’s the way we like to have it (a balanced scoring attack),” coach Ottoson said. “A little more balance; get everybody involved, because they all can score. Clay (Miller) and Justin (Keith) are doing most of the scoring, but we need to get Nash (Stopko) and Tyler (Schulte) involved. Dillon (Villhauer), he’ll get his. I was proud. I was happy with that effort.”
The win boosted CCA to 9-7 ahead of a challenging five-game stretch to close out the regular season. The Clippers are on the road at Maquoketa Friday, Feb. 10, and at home against Western Dubuque on Tuesday, Feb. 14. The game against Anamosa will be made up on Thursday, Feb. 16, at home.
