Threats to Liberty High Juvenile in custody

Instagram posts prompted school closure and arrest

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Police Department took a minor into custody Friday, Nov. 17, following a series of threats towards students of Liberty High School.
At about 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, police dispatch received word an anonymous individual made posts that evening threatening to “shoot up” Liberty High School with references to individual students. The comments were made through an anonymous profile, in a group chat, on Instagram, a popular social media application.
Police notified the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) and began investigating what were deemed as credible threats with collaboration from families involved in the Instagram posts.
The ICCSD chose to cancel Friday, Nov. 17, classes in response to the threats. Other schools in the district remained open.
The following morning around 9:30 a.m., the suspect responsible for the threatening posts was taken into custody. Because the suspect is a minor, police have not released their identity. Information on whether or not the suspect is a Liberty High School student has not been disclosed.
The individual was charged with first-degree harassment, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in prison; and a threat of terrorism, a class D felony, punishable by up to five years in prison.
Shortly following the arrest of the suspect, the ICCSD chose to reopen Liberty High School for extracurricular activities.
