Tournament hopes high for women

Samantha Logic passed Cara Consuegra as Iowa’s all-time assists leader during the Hawkeye women’s 81-56 blowout over Illinois Sunday. Logic also added 12 points and seven rebounds to go with her five assists. (file photo by Don Lund)

It was senior night last Thursday and with a lot of help from Iowa’s lone senior, Theairra Taylor, the Hawkeyes took out Ohio State, 65-61.
What a great story and what a great player.
I don’t know how many athletes would come back after three knee surgeries, but Theairra did.
Johanna Solverson came back after two, but three is a major mental challenge.
“Thee” has missed 53 games in her career at Iowa, but hasn’t missed a start in two years.
The 5-11 senor from Minnesota scored 21 points against the Buckeyes and had four of the 15 Iowa steals.
The Hawkeyes forced 21 turnovers and Samantha Logic handed out 10 assists and the Hawkeyes picked up their 22nd victory.
Both the men and women are fighting for the fourth seed in the Big Ten Tournament.
They both need a little help.
Iowa finished its regular season with an 81-56 blowout at Illinois.
Theairra is playing her best basketball, Samantha Logic sets a record for most assists and the Hawks get their 23rd win.
That’s the most wins ever with Lisa Bluder as head coach and I believe this is her and her staff’s best coaching job.
The Hawks go eight deep but play basically the starting five.
Iowa has only one player over 6-1 while the rest of the Big Ten has at least three or four.
Of course, no one in the Big Ten has Samantha Logic.
The 5-11 junior had five assists Sunday and passed Cara Consuegra as the all time assists leader at Iowa with 577. Cara had 576.
Balanced scoring as usual with four players in double figures, shooting 56 percent from 3-point range, 10 steals and seven blocked shots gives Iowa momentum going into the tournament starting Thursday.
If Iowa makes one more basket against Purdue, they would be a top four seed and playing on Friday.
That didn’t happen, so they will have to play Illinois again as Iowa is seeded fifth, Illinois 12th.
