Trojan wrestlers dominate, win Iowa City dual

IOWA CITY— The West High wrestlers had little trouble Thursday, Jan. 19, putting two more dual meet wins into the books. West sent the Dubuque Hempstead Mustangs to the glue factory with a 67-10 pummeling, and ate Waterloo West’s lunch 71-3. Seniors Dakota Bauer, Sam Chalkley, Gradey Gambrall, Jack Hathaway, Justin Koethe, Phillip Laux, Mike Watkins and Ernest Willis were honored for Senior Night, as were wrestling cheerleaders Kailey Barber, Lindsay Gravatt and Natalie Koberna.
Bauer opened the evening with a 28-13 technical fall at the expense of Dubuque’s Jake Duccini at 132 pounds. Keegan Wakefield won the 138 pound match by fall in 2:39, Gambrall won a 26-9 technical fall over Cody Callahan at 145 and Chalkley only needed 36 seconds to pin Mitch Pfohl in the 152 match. In 160 pound action, Koethe won a 17-2 technical fall over Mark Owens while Watkins won his 170 pound bout with a 15-0 technical fall on Ernest Harris. Blake Bohner won a 9-0 major decision at 182 pounds over Dubuque’s Layton Fritsch. Mickey Pelfrey picked up a forfeit at 195 and Paul Pelfrey pinned Kenny Wilson in 29 seconds for the 220 pound match.
Colin Foerstner won by forfeit at 285, Jasmine Bailey picked up a forfeit at 106 pounds, and Laux won by forfeit at 113. Willis won his 120 pound match with a 22-7 technical fall over Brandon Feldman while Hathaway closed the dual with a 38 second pin job on Dubuque’s Brett McIntyre.
Waterloo West defeated Hempstead 47-25.
The Trojans are on the road Thursday, Feb. 2, at Dubuque Senior for a double-dual with Waterloo East before Regional Duals on Wednesday, Feb. 8. West High will host Districts on Saturday, Feb. 11, with a noon start time.
