Trojans earn All-Division Baseball spots

Stumpff is MVC Valley Div. Coach of the Year

IOWA CITY– Charlie Stumpff and his staff have received the Mississippi Valley Conference’s (MVC) Valley Division Coach of the Year honors. The 2016 All-Division Baseball Selections were released Thursday, July 21, with the West High Trojans named the Division’s Team Champion and Cedar Rapids Jefferson’s Spencer Van Scoyoc earning Athlete of the Year honors. Eight West High players found a berth on the First Team, Second Team, Honorable Mention or All-Academic rosters.

First Team
Austin Miller (senior), Izaya Ono-Fullard (junior) and Connor McCaffery (junior)
Miller, a pitcher with 11 starts and a dozen appearances on the mound, built a 10-1 record in the regular season over 71-2/3 innings of work. He gave up 18 earned runs for an ERA of 1.76, struck out 69 batters and walked 13. At the plate, he hit with a .306 average. He had 11 hits including four doubles and a triple with five runs scored and 11 RBI. In the field, he made eight outs and had a .875 fielding percentage.
Ono-Fullard, an infielder with 38 starts in the regular season, made 27 outs with a .865 fielding percentage. At bat, he knocked 42 hits including eight doubles and a pair of home runs for a .353 batting average. He scored 35 runs and drove in 30 more. In addition, he stole 17 bases. He made two appearances on the mound this year for 1-2/3 innings of work with two strike outs and a pair of walks without giving up an earned run.
McCaffery, an outfielder with 36 starts on the regular season, 88 outs and a .989 fielding percentage, had a .412 batting average with 47 hits including 10 doubles, three triples and eight homers. He scored 41 runs, had 32 RBI and stole seven bases.

Second Team
Nate Disterhoft (junior) and Nate Barnes (senior)
Disterhoft, a first baseman with 34 starts in the 2016 regular season, had a .371 batting average with 39 hits including four doubles, a triple and one home run. He scored 24 runs, drove in 22 more and stole a dozen bases. He made 202 outs with a .977 fielding percentage.
Barnes, a utility player, made 11 starts as pitcher with a 9-0 record over 52 innings of work, gave up 19 earned runs for a 2.56 ERA, walked 29 and struck out 44. In the field, he had a fielding percentage of .833 with 15 outs. At bat, Barnes hit with a .406 average. He knocked 28 hits this season with one homer, scored 14 runs and had 14 RBI.

Honorable Mention
Tanner Lohaus (senior) and Logan Sims (junior)
Lohaus hit with a .296 average good for 29 hits including four doubles in 35 games started this year. He scored 25 runs, had 21 RBI and stole 18 bases. He worked 41-1/3 innings on the mound with nine appearances for a 3-1 record. He gave up 22 earned runs for a 3.73 ERA, walked 23 and struck out 43. In the field, he made 35 outs with a .915 fielding percentage.
Sims had 33 starts and played in 37 games this season with a .361 batting average and 39 hits to his credit. He knocked 10 doubles, one triple and one home run, scored 41 runs and had 28 RBI. Sims stole 23 bases as well in the regular season. He also made 71 outs with a 1.00 fielding percentage.

All-Academic:
Barnes and Zachary McLean (senior)
McLean had eight appearances on the mound during the regular season with a 2-1 record in 13 innings of work. He gave up one earned run for a 0.54 ERA, walked nine and struck out seven.
