Trojans reign in rivalry clash

IOWA CITY– Take hot, humid weather, add in a long-standing rivalry, and you have the ingredients for two nights of dramatic high school baseball.
Charlie Stumpff’s West High Trojans survived the heat and rival City High in a two-night battle for citywide bragging rights.
The teams met Monday night at West where the Trojans shut down City in a 7-2 display of baseball domination. Ezra Reiners scored in the bottom of the first on a Ryan Siems RBI single to put West on the board 1-0. The Trojans scored two runs in the third on a two-run homer belted-out by Siems. West loaded up the bases but weren’t able to capitalize on their fortune. In the fifth, Devin Raffensperger unloaded a two-run homer followed shortly after by a solo homerun from Colin Baker.
City finally got on the board in the top of the sixth with a two-run RBI single. A key strikeout from West’s Nick Grimsman got the Trojans out of the top of the inning, and an insurance RBI double from Reid Bonner in the bottom sealed the win.
Ezra Reiners, Siems, Bonner, Declan Doyle, Raffensperger, Tyus Adkins and Baker all put up hits, Siems led in RBIs with three, Raffensperger was credited with two. Grimsman worked all seven innings throwing 104 pitches. The senior struckout 11 and walked one while giving up six hits and two earned runs.
For City: 2 runs, 6 hits, 3 errors, 5 left on base.
For West: 7 runs, 9 hits, 0 errors, 6 left on base.
Tuesday night, the teams met on City’s diamond for round two. City attempted to atone for its sins the night before, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first and holding West scoreless until the top of the third. A three-run sixth inning gave the Trojans a 4-2 lead, which was cut by a Little Hawk run in the bottom of the inning. A West run in the top of the seventh followed by a scoreless half for City settled the matter.
Siems led at the plate with two doubles and two RBIs, Doyle and Grimsman had a single apiece while home run machine Raffensperger was held to one single and one RBI. Sam Scott and Adkins shared the mound, with Scott working 5.1 innings, and 1.2 for Adkins. Scott threw 63 pitches, striking out two and walking two, while giving up seven hits and three runs (two earned). Adkins threw 23 pitches, walked one and gave up two hits.
For West: 5 runs, 5 hits, 2 errors, 4 left on base. For City: 3 runs, 9 hits, 2 errors, 8 left on base.
The battle could be rejoined in substate action, pending the outcome of City’s Friday, July 13, game v. Dubuque Hempstead and West’s contest against Cedar Rapids Washington. Both games will be at home at 7 p.m.
