Trojans split with Dubuque Sr. Rams
IOWA CITY– A two-run homer by Devin Raffensperger gave the West High Trojans a 2-0 lead in the second game of a varsity doubleheader Monday, July 1, at home against Dubuque Senior.
The Trojans split the night with the Rams, dropping game one, 6-2, and taking the nightcap, 6-1. West was down 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning in game one when Reid Bonner smacked a double to get on base. Declan Doyle doubled and drove Bonner home to put the Trojans on the scoreboard. Raffensperger reached first base on an error while Doyle advanced to third. A Tyus Adkins single brought in Doyle for the second run. While West had opportunities in the game including loading up the bases, the Rams prevailed with a pair of runs in the first inning, and a four-run blast in the top of the fifth.
Sam Scott pitched five innings giving up six hits and six runs with five earned, walked five and struck out six. Tanner Hakert worked two innings giving up one hit and walking one. The Trojans had four hits, committed three errors, and left ten men stranded.
In the nightcap Doyle singled and came home on Raffensperger’s first inning homer. Charlie Stumpff’s crew had a major scoring opportunity in the second as the Trojans loaded the bases on a Colin Baker single, Josh Verry getting hit by a pitch, and Tanner Wilson knocking out a base hit. A fielder’s choice put Ezra Reiners on base, scoring Baker. Unfortunately for West, the others were left sitting in the setting sun.
The Trojans loaded the bases again in the third inning with a double from Bonner, a single by Doyle, and Adkins getting a walk. Baker was next up to bat and also walked which brought in Bonner for a 4-1 lead after the Rams brought in a man in the top of the inning. The final two West runs came in the sixth. Verry doubled and had Hakert take his place on base. Hakert stole third on a wild pitch and was in position to score on a Wilson single. Wilson came in as again the bases loaded with Reiners walking, Bonner getting a base hit, and Doyle walking-in Wilson.
West had nine hits and committed two errors in the game. Adkins went the distance on the mound giving up three hits and one run while striking out two.
The Trojans visit Cedar Rapids Washington for a doubleheader on Wednesday, July 10, and head for Cedar Falls on Friday, July 12. Tuesday, July 16, finds West at Bettendorf for a sophomore/varsity tilt before closing out the regular season at home on Wednesday, July 17.
