Trojans take two

IOWA CITY– Cedar Rapids Washington’s stand-out pitcher A.J. Puk had the West High Trojans stymied for three innings Monday night at home. Puk held the Trojans scoreless in the first half of a varsity doubleheader until the fourth inning when West got one of two Warrior runs back. Washington had put two runs on the board in the third, and West put up two in the fifth for the lead. After 98 pitches, Puk and his arm retired for the night in West’s half of the sixth inning. The Trojans took advantage of the new man as they unleashed a six-run barrage on their way to a 9-2 win.
West’s nine runs came from Ezra Reiners, Reid Bonner (two), Declan Doyle, Kellen Yoder, Sam Scott, Nick Grimsman Tom Harder and Wade Nash. Verry, Bonner, Doyle, Yoder and Colin Baker all had one RBI apiece. Pitcher Luke Crimmins helped his cause with two hits including a double with three RBIs. Scott also knocked out a double. Crimmins worked all seven innings for 108 pitches. He struck out eight, walked three, gave up six hits and two earned runs.
For West: 9 runs, 7 hits, 1 error, 8 left on base.
For CR Washington: 2 runs, 6 hits, 0 errors, 8 left on base.
In the nightcap the Trojans shut-out the Warriors, sending them home a little early in a six-inning, 10-0 effort. West put up four runs in the bottom of the first, added one in the second, three more in the fourth and one apiece in the fifth and sixth. Reiners had three runs in his old-school socks and leggings. Other Trojans scoring runs were Tanner Wilson (two), Doyle, Crimmins (two), Verry and Jay Slocum. Wilson, Bonner, Crimmins, Verry, Baker, Yoder and Ryan Aller all had base hits. RBIs went to Bonner, Doyle, Crimmins (two), Verry, Baker and Aller.
Sam Scott threw all six innings striking out two, walking two, giving up four hits and no runs in 67 pitches.
For West: 10 runs, 15 hits, 0 errors, 9 left on base.
For Washington: 0 runs, 4 hits, 2 errors, 7 left on base.
The Trojans are home again on Thursday, June 21, for a Sophomore/Varsity visit from CR Prairie. Other remaining home dates include Wednesday, June 27, for a varsity double-header against Waterloo West, and Saturday, June 30, for a JV/Varsity pair against North Scott.
