IOWA CITY– Hot weather and high humidity didn’t slow down Charlie Stumpff’s West High Trojans Wednesday evening as they rolled the Waterloo West Wahawks twice on the home diamond in a varsity doubleheader.
West took the opener 17-7 in six innings. The Wahawks put up two runs in the first, and West answered in-kind. Waterloo added a run in the second; West came back with seven more. In the third the Wahawks added two more to narrow the gap to 9-5, but the Trojans had a three-run inning. West held the Wahawks scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings, allowed two runs in the top of the sixth, and put up one of their own in the fifth. West’s four runs in the sixth ended the game on the ten-run mercy rule.
Devin Raffenserger and Colin Baker nailed home runs, Declan Doyle and Tyus Adkins both put up doubles. Doyle and Adkins also both had three RBI, while Ezra Reiners, Raffenserger and Colin Baker had two RBI each.
On the mound Nick Grimsman, Andrew Raymer and Ryan Aller rotated in with Grimsman working four innings, Raymer for 1.1 and Aller for .2. Grimsman gave up five earned runs, struck-out five, gave up six hits and walked three in 49 pitches thrown. Raymer gave up two earned runs, struck-out one, gave up three hits and walked two. Aller threw four strikes and one ball in five pitches.
For Iowa City West: 17 runs, 15 hits, 0 errors, 9 left on base.
For Waterloo West: 7 runs, 9 hits, 7 errors, 5 left on base.
While the air temperature hadn’t dropped much for the nightcap, the action on the diamond cooled off significantly. West put up one run in the bottom of the first, three in the fifth and one in the seventh for the 5-4 win. The Wahawks were shut-out until the fifth inning (one run) and came alive in the top of the sixth with three runs.
Ryan Siems belted-out a homer, Reiners had a double and singles were put up by Reid Bonner, Raffenserger, Josh Verry and Baker. Raffenserger had three RBI in the game. Sam Scott, Aller and Sam Seads worked the mound with Scott giving up one earned run, striking-out two, giving up three hits and walking one in five innings. Aller gave up three earned runs and two hits. Seads struck-out two and walked two.
For Iowa City West: 5 runs, 7 hits, 0 errors, 7 left on base.
For Waterloo West: 4 runs, 7 hits, 2 errors, 8 left on base.
The Trojans are home Friday, July 6, for a double-header against Cedar Falls with a 5 p.m. start time. Tuesday, July 10, Stumpff’s crew takes on Bettendorf in a 10th/Varsity bill at home. The regular season ends Wednesday, July 11, with a 10th/Varsity set on the road.
